The bag of potatoes weighs three quarters of itself plus 2 1/4 lbs. How many pounds did the bag weigh?

Let x represent the weight of the bag of potatoes.

x = (3/4) x + 2 1/4

Subtract (3/4) x from both sides, giving

(1/4) x = 2 1/4

Multiply both sides by 4, giving

x = 9
